Dimitar Genchev transforms the flat surfaces of his paintings into almost tangible, three-dimensional environments, turning often mundane subject matter into uncanny and surrealistic scenes.
Watch Over Me explores the presence of what is felt rather than seen. Through his still life compositions of nature and industrial landscapes, he captures moods and atmospheres that suggest an unseen force quietly surrounding us. The works evoke a sense of comfort and security, inviting viewers to reflect on the invisible presences that watch over us.
Guided by intuition, his eyes become a scanner, observing the world in a constant search for the right composition for his paintings. In the studio, he reconstructs and analyses these observations through the act of painting. Genchev layers realistic depictions onto abstract backgrounds, creating tension and rhythm through stark contrasts. By juxtaposing rough and smooth, blurred with defined, and vivid with muted tones, he constructs hybrid, dream-like scenes of still life, nature, and industrial subject matter. Through these layers of paint, one can see Genchev’s ongoing search for a masterpiece. He approaches still life not merely as arrangements of objects, but as carriers of atmosphere, emotion, and presence.
